Not everyone has the luxury of having a second home, so how do you make your one and only home feel like a vacation home? That’s the focus for the design team from Herman’s Furniture for this retreat.
The homeowners bought this house for its location on Catawba Island, but after the renovation was complete, you might feel as if you were transported to Hilton Head Island. The goal was to lighten up the home and freshen up old favorites. For inspiration, the designer wanted to create a casual, comfortable look with various shades of blue and a nautical feel.
A wall was knocked down to build the homeowner’s favorite room. The sunroom is an addition that brings open space and natural light into the home. Often, a room can get overcomplicated with too many colors and designs, so the designer chose to use only shades of blue to complement the tranquil space. This room was meant to be just for the homeowners.
A timeless vacation home design tip:
Here’s a great tip for anyone who doesn’t want to commit to one style: make your more expensive pieces neutral. This way, they can grow with you.
For example, the homeowners wanted a nautical look, so the designer recommended this versatile La-Z-Boy sectional and brought the nautical theme into the room through a woven end table and other accessories.
Many of us have sentimental pieces of furniture that we want to hang on to, but they don’t quite visually fit the new look we’re aiming for. That’s how the homeowners felt about their rocking chair, seen in the video above. What was once a shade of color that just didn’t work is now the perfect fit.
