When it comes to designing homes for entertaining, the interior design team at Herman’s Furniture and Design are second-to-none.

In today’s example, we’re headed to a waterfront home in Marblehead, Ohio, where the homeowners love to entertain. Now, this is a young family who wanted to grow into their house, but they also wanted to create a space that was fit for the best party on the block. That’s where our designer from Herman’s Furniture had to meet the challenge.

Designing Homes for Entertaining: The Kitchen is Key

The goal was to create a modern, comfortable home that is still family-friendly. The inspiration was to blend organic design features with just the right amount of glitz to complement the homeowners’ contrasting styles. We know from decades of designing homes for entertaining that people really like gathering in a kitchen.

The designer worked with the homeowners to maximize this open kitchen plan by choosing seating that tucks in under the island and then picking out this large white table, which acts as a visual and functional extension of the kitchen.

Great Rooms, Great Times

This is the great room, and it is great. Whenever you’re picking out furniture, fabric, and patterns for a large space, it can get a little tricky; you don’t want your decor to be swallowed up by the space. The designer chose a leather sectional, which is easy to clean, and this oversized print for the fabric on the chairs, which works perfectly in this grand space—all anchored by a deep cobalt blue rug.

Designing Homes for Entertaining in Smaller Spaces

Here’s a great design tip for any home with a large, empty wall: the designer at Herman’s Furniture chose to use this idea for the entryway of this home by grouping together multiple mirrors. It creates the illusion of a larger mirror and also doubles as beautiful wall art.

Using Color

Another important design element to point out is that there’s a lot of white throughout this home. Remember, we mentioned that the homeowners wanted a family-friendly space. The designer chose white furniture, white floors, and white cabinets—all hard surfaces that can be cleaned.

Entertaining with Kids? Herman’s Has Solutions for Those Toys!

Okay, truth: the homeowners made this house look pristine before we came to film, and you would probably find it hard to believe that there’s a two-year-old that lives here. The designers worked with the parents to find a stylish way to hide toys under this table and in this sleek credenza, which is easily accessible for the little one.

Designing Homes for Entertaining Tip: Bring Outside Inside

This house sits right on the water. The large windows and open floor plan offer the perfect feeling of an indoor-outdoor living space. The designer was able to capture the lively energy of this young family by incorporating a modern, sleek look with organic accessories and fabrics to soften the space.
