About this Episode: Design Your Home Office Space

In this episode of Design Your Home with Herman’s Furniture, host Andrea Vecchio joins Susie, who has made over this space. We’re talking about office spaces right now, and I think no matter what the size of the space is—and often, office spaces are a little bit smaller—they’re still really important to whoever occupies them.

What was interesting, Susie shared, is that the male homeowner doesn’t like blue at all—and yet, there’s a lot of blue in this room. So how did she make that work without having to repaint?

So, what were some of the things you were thinking about going into this office space?

“This particular space, we wanted it to be a little more casual,” Susie explained. “We also wanted it not to look like the rest of the house. They wanted something more relaxed, so we chose metal accents and a slightly more casual look overall. We picked this Isil rug, and they needed very specific things in here: a desk, a chair, a bookcase, and a file cabinet. Everything had to fit, and this is not a large room.”

That goes to show that you can actually do quite a bit in a small space. “Right,” Susie said. “They have a lot of desks now that are smaller and scaled down. This one fits every need they have, but we had to make it all work on a much smaller scale.”

“That’s interesting,” she said. “We decided the best thing to do was to neutralize it. We put in neutral shades and rugs, added accessories to the bookcase, and brought the outside in again with natural elements. So when Brandon walks in, he doesn’t see the blue—he sees everything else.”

That’s a great design tip: if you’re working with a strong color, even one that not everyone loves, you can neutralize it through accessories and furniture choices. “Absolutely,” Susie agreed. “When you walk into empty rooms and see bold-colored walls—especially in small areas—it can feel overwhelming. But as soon as you accessorize and add furniture, it completely changes the look, as you can see here.”

So, go with neutrals and natural textures when you want to balance out a bold color.

“Well, you did a beautiful job,” Andrea said. “And they’re both happy with it, which is what counts.”
